The Bicek's: loving the journey

temp-post-imageHi everyone! My husband Marty and I joined Get Fit in the summer of 2014. We were members of a different gym where the workouts were similar in nature to Get Fit, however the nutritional support was not there. In the beginning we were successful in losing a few pounds, however that weight loss stalled and for almost 2 years we remained unchanged, yet we attended workouts almost daily. After we joined Get Fit we quickly realized what a fit family is all about.

Fast forward to Rock Body Bootcamp 11. I knew this was exactly what we needed to jumpstart our transformation. Marty had goals to run another full marathon. (His first marathon was in high school and he considers it a disaster). He had a lofty goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I was just ready to feel comfortable in my own skin and be medically healthy! I had been on high blood pressure medications since my mid twenties and was still suffering from hypertension even on the medication. I had also been on an antidepressant since the birth of my first child in 2004. I was terrified to come off of it.

As a nurse, I knew that our diet and lifestyle was a big contributing factor to my ailments. The problem was that I just didn’t know how to change it. It’s so easy to become frustrated and “starting Monday” we are going on a “diet!” We failed this cycle many times and the reason we failed is because it’s not realistic.

Fast forward to bootcamp! I was terrified! I was scared that we would be hungry all the time. We consider ourselves foodies and I LOVE to cook! I thought I was trading delicious for boring. I thought clean eating was bland food. At the start of bootcamp I accepted this as our fate for the next 8 weeks. I didn’t know at the time how wrong I was. The food is AMAZING! Who knew? And the variety! This was very important to me. I pride myself on the food I cook and the bootcamp menu and recipes were perfect.temp-post-image

My results were amazing. At the end of bootcamp, I lost 23 pounds and multiple inches from all over. The most important thing that happened to me at the end of bootcamp was the fact that my blood pressure was TOO LOW and I was able to come off both my blood pressure meds and antidepressant for the first time in years! In the past I had just accepted the use of these meds as a normal part of aging. My total cholesterol dropped from 206 to 149!

I am now 1 year out from my first bootcamp and have continued to lose more weight and gain more strength. Get Fit has given us the tools to maintain clean eating. Marty and I have both completed a few bootcamps since then and we LOVE it! 2016 will bring a whole new set of goals for us. I will begin ½ marathon and Spartan training and Marty will be training to qualify for Boston. The old me had myself convinced that these things were never within my reach because I was never “athletic.” The new me knows that it is possible, and WILL happen. We are a husband and wife team, and we will smash the goals we have set for ourselves!
