Heather's Story: Fighting Cancer

I am 42 years old and a mom to three girls 16, 13 and 11 and married to an amazing man Jeff. I am a stay at home mom that works 3 different "fun" jobs, but I call them hobbies because when you love what you do its not a job! Besides being a wife and a mom, I am the Director of Nutrition at Get Fit Modesto.

8 years ago, at the age of 34, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. At the time my kids were 4, 6 and 8 years old. I was devastated the day I found out and my husband had me dead in 2 weeks by reading the internet. After that day I decided and believed there is a time and a place for everything and this was it. I knew that God had aloud this to happen in my life because he was going to do something amazing with it. So I went in for a double mastectomy and reconstruction along with 2 months of chemotherapy. As I was very sick I would ask the doctors why? Why was this happening to me at 34 years old with a very young family? They would always tell me that everyone has cancer cells you just never know when you are going to get it or if you will get it.

Cancer didn’t run in my family, in fact I had never even known anyone to have cancer. Because of this I really wanted to research the HOWS, the WHATS and the WHYS of cancer for ME. With that said, let me give you a little background of my childhood.

I was raised in a family where food was a big part of our lives. We ate what we wanted when we wanted no matter what it was. As I began to look into my childhood diet I began to realize the correlation between food, diet and disease. .

I lived on processed food, diet sodas and sugar. I was eating food but yet my body was nutritionally starved. I was always trying so hard to be thin so I would try every possible diet out there. You name it I have tried it. From cabbage soup diet, diet pills, to starving myself. There were so many addictions to food that were emotionally hard. I am a walking example of how nutrition and exercise saved my life!

With all of the research I have done I have come to believe that my cancer came from what I was feeding my body and the habits I had formed over the years. Just like skin cancer is caused by the sun, I believe my cancer was caused by the food I fed it. My story led me to want to help prevent others from going through what I did.
