25 Things About Jonathan and Tara

25 things about Jonathan and Tara

(in no particular order)

1. We are high school sweethearts. Which seems like it was just yesterday. The old people were right when they said that time flies! (now I’m one of those old people) Because when you’re in high school 30 was old. We met when Jonathan was a Junior and I was a Sophomore at Modesto Christian.

2. Time really does fly. We have been married 13 years this July. We were married at Grand Island Mansion in Walnut Grove, it was truly such a special day, filled with all of the people we love. And everyone heard the story of our first kiss… which was highly embarrassing but funny.

3. We are the parents of 3 busy, active, crazy, loving, did I mention busy…. Boys! They are our greatest joy and our greatest challenge.

4. Jonathan is also a fire engineer with Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District (SCFPD) and has been a firefighter for 11 years. When he’s not at Get Fit he’s driving E-21 around in Modesto’s airport district.

5. I (Tara) am a closet math nerd. I earned a bachelor's degree in math and a single subject teaching credential from CSU Stanislaus. I taught high school math at Central Valley High School in Ceres and Middle School math at Hickman Charter School before discovering my true passion for health and more importantly for people.

6. We are self-described foodies. Our favorite thing to do on vacation is find good food! Sometimes that is a 5-star restaurant and sometimes it’s a hole in the wall joint that only locals visit. One year for our birthday’s our team got us a gift certificate to the Kitchen in Sacramento, it was an amazing food experience!

7. Jonathan is a die-hard Cowboys fan… He once met Emmitt Smith and was so star struck that he couldn’t utter a word.

8. Jonathan has a serious Yogurt Mill addiction. They know him by name and have named him their most loyal customer. I think he deserves a plaque on the wall or something.

9. We are so lucky to live on the same street as my grandparents, sister (Kayla & Kyle) and brother (Kyle & Natalie). At any given time if you drive down our street you are bound to see us hanging out in the front yard like “okies” or one of our kids sneaking to aunties house or to Nonno & Nonni's.

10. Our all time favorite vacation spot: Wailea, Maui. Neither of us had ever been to Hawaii until we were adults and we love it. We just took the kids for the first time this last year and almost weekly they ask us when we can go back. I think they loved the exclusive family time, as did we.

11. Jonathan's favorite book...Very hard to choose...it totally depends on the subject.. I really enjoy leadership/organizational leadership and personal growth… If I had to choose it would be The Seven Practices of Effective Ministry - Andy Stanely (organizational leadership) and Essentialism - Greg Mckeown (personal growth). Anything Patrick Lencioni or Jim Collins puts out is worth reading!

12. My (Tara’s) favorite book… I’ve never been a reader but now I love, love reading. But I love reading for a purpose. It’s really hard to narrow it down to one so I’m going to say two, and they are two similar books with the same theme ;) The Best Yes by Lysa Terquist and Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist.

13. We have a passion for people. It was never in our “plan” to own a business, obviously by our career choices of firefighter and math teacher, but when Get Fit happened and we saw an opportunity we knew that the Lord set this path before us and had been preparing us to lead. The last 4 - 5 years have been some of the hardest but most rewarding years of our life. If we were doing this just for the sake of business we would have been gone a long time ago. The life change that happens here is worth all of the sacrifice.

14. Jonathan likes to go duck hunting. (In his free time..hahaha)

15. We are big Dave Ramsey fans and live by his principles in our personal and business finances. Jonathan had the opportunity to meet Dave this past year at the Entreleadership Summit in Dallas, TX.

16. Jonathan’s favorite food is: Outside of froyo with rainbow sprinkles…hmmm... it would have to be mexican food or fried okra.

17. Tara’s favorite food is: Nonni’s homemade raviolis.

18. I had an airbrushed truck in high school that my uncle gifted to me. The picture says more than a thousand words… #thoughtiwassocool (don’t hate)

19. (Jonathan) - I lost my dad as I was entering my freshman year in high school… It was a just as difficult as it sounds but I am thankful for the time we had together. He was my best friend and set a great example of what a Godly man looks like. He taught me the values that have made me the man I am today. I can’t wait to catch up with him in heaven some day.

20. We really love Disneyland. It just is a magical place and we love making memories there.

21. We love our camping crew! Neither of us every camped as kids but the first year after we were married we got invited by the Rotan’s to join them on their annual camping trip. When we told my family that Jonathan was going to take me camping they totally laughed at him and thought I’d never last! (see #22 for why) Back to the Rotan’s, ever since then we’ve never let them get rid of us, we’ve be a part of the annual camping trip every year for 10+ years. We love that crew and all the memories we’ve made.

22. (Tara) I have major hotel anxiety. I bring my own sheets and NEVER step barefoot. I don’t let anyone lay on the comforter and it really is a problem I should talk to a professional about. Haha!

23. We love Boyz 2 Men. We’ve seen them three times in concert. It never gets old.

24. Our faith has defined who we are. It’s because of what He did for us that we are able to be his hands and feet here on earth. The highest priority in our life is not each other, our kids, or our business, but our relationship with the Lord. We love our church and are actively involved serving there. One Church is a place that loves Jesus and loves people, we feel blessed to be a part of such a great place.

25. Raising a family and running a small business together is no joke!! It can resemble all out craziness sometimes!! There is no possible way we would be able to do it without the help and support of our amazing family, friends, and team (who are really in the family/friends category). Get Fit is truly a group effort and we are so blessed to serve our community together.
